It’s November! That means I’ve been at Superfly for just over a month now. It’s flown by, but in the same way, feels like I’ve been here forever!
I’ve always been quite a creative person in different ways. I enjoy drawing and taking photos, but I’ve also always had an interest in reading and writing. I studied English Language, Textile Design and Photography at Sixth Form and loved all of the courses because they were creative but so different. For years whilst I was growing up, I was dead set on going to university to become a teacher. I got a place at the University I’d always wanted to go to, doing my (then) dream course. Pretty soon after leaving Sixth Form I decided that I wasn’t going to take the offer, and that I wanted to take a gap year to take a break from education. After a while it became pretty clear that I wasn’t really feeling the idea and so I got a job and postponed my plans to give myself some time to see what I wanted to do.
Eventually I realised that I didn’t want to go into teaching, and felt quite stuck with what to do as this had been my goal since being about six years old. I was working in retail at the time and while I enjoyed it, I wasn’t able to show my creative streak in my role and lost touch of all the things I used to do for fun, like photography and writing. When the Superfly job popped up on my news feed, I knew I wanted to try and apply. I’d followed their social media for a while and it just always looked like such a cool place to work. I’m really glad I took that leap! One month on and I still find it really surreal that I’m now behind the scenes of what I used to see online.
When Nick and Charles rang me to offer the job nobody was home so I had to show my excitement by telling my dog what had just happened… she wasn’t as excited as me but wagged her tail all the same, so I knew she was on board 🐶. I was insanely excited and just felt so lucky to get the chance to go into something that I knew I’d enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, I was really nervous too, as this was my first role in anything other than retail jobs – but obviously very excited to be doing something so new.
My first day was a bit of a blur, and when I look back I find it funny how nervous I was compared to where I am now. Everyone made me feel so settled straight away so I had nothing to worry about, and now I can’t imagine working anywhere else!
As a Social Media and Marketing Executive, my role involves me working independently quite a lot, which means I can put my own spin on things alongside finding my own content, and I’m really enjoying being able to get back in touch with my creative side, finally! When I told my best friends about what I’d be doing they even said that it just seemed so suited to me, and this made me feel even more excited about it all, and has ever since. The teamwork that goes into Superfly is great as whilst everyone has their own specialities, I could ask any one of the team about something and they’d be happy to help. It’s just such a nice environment to be in! One of my favourite things about the role itself is that there’s always something new to learn about. Every day is different and I’m constantly learning new skills and speaking to new people. I know that there’s going to be some really good opportunities here and I can’t wait to see what’s next!
