With marketing it’s important to plan for the future. The areas which see success are likely to continue to grow, and those which are less effective will naturally lose importance. As marketing and technology become increasingly interconnected we’re seeing a more rapid evolution of marketing than ever before. New technologies are being introduced constantly, and with them come new opportunities for marketers. Here’s where I see things going with marketing in 2015:
- Social advertising – I know I talk about social advertising regularly on the Superfly Blog, but it’s an area I really do believe will continue to grow in 2015. Not only does it offer some of the most powerful targeting of any form of advertising, but it’s incredibly cost effective. As other social platforms grow I fully expect to see more self-serve advertising channels launch, such as Instagram’s. Existing networks are likely to improve and expand the features on their current ad platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter. This is one to watch, and an area your business should be exploring if you aren’t already.
- Content marketing (viral and unique) – Considering how embedded social networks are in our every day lives these days, I expect to see a greater focus on creating viral and unique content when it comes to marketing. If you create something quirky, interesting and unique, users can share it rapidly with their friends and families via social networks. This leads to content going viral – the ability to get your content and brand in the eyes of thousands of people within a very small period of time (and at little to no cost!). Brand these days are often chasing after being able to create the next viral hit. I expect we’ll see this trend flourish in 2015.
- SEO landscape changes – It was only earlier today I tweeted about Google’s webmaster trends analyst recommending to avoid link building as it can lead to more harm than good. I see Google slowly devaluing direct manual link building, and instead moving to a stronger social focus. Not only do I think social signals will become stronger linked to SEO in general, but I believe we’ll continue to see a larger focus on unique content which is shared socially; let’s call it link nurturing rather than link building.
- Mobile marketing – As smartphones and tablets begin to dominate web traffic, I believe we’ll see more attention in the mobile space when it comes to marketing. Whether it’s content tailored to mobiles, apps or just websites and landing pages with improved mobile design. As our mobile devices become more important to us, mobile marketing will follow suit.
